Functions and Relations
Grade 9-Diploma
4. Students understand and interpret the characteristics of functions using graphs, tables, and algebraic techniques.
c. Use concepts such as domain, range, zeros, intercepts, and maximum and minimum values.

Rational: In this class we will discuss the basic functions and their graphs.

Assessment

Formative (Assessment for Learning)
The students will get a quick pre-quiz to determine which basic functions they already know the graph for. This quiz will be graded in class and not count in the grade book. The students will then fill in a T-chart with the basic graphs. This chart will have all the equations and the students will draw the graph and explain how to move the graph. There will also be a jeopardy game toward the end of class with questions dealing with vocabulary, graphs, equations, and other topics that have been covered.
Summative (Assessment of Learning)
The students will have homework to pass in from last class. This homework will be corrected and handed back by the next class. At the end of class the students will be assigned new homework and they will be expected to be getting the final data for their stocks.

Integration

Technology: During this class the students are going to take a jeopardy quiz that will be on the SmartBoard. The students are going to get into groups of five and whichever team is picked will send a representative up to the SmartBoard to select the correct answer or to just give the answer to the question.
English: This class will incorporate English because the students are going to have to work with vocabulary. This vocabulary will have to be defined and used to make graphs. Also during the jeopardy game the students are going to have to use their vocal skills and verbal intelligences.

Groupings

During the end of class the students are going to get into groups of five. These groups will be picked randomly and they are to come up with a group name. At this point they are going to play a jeopardy game using the SmartBoard. When an answer is shown the groups are going to have to raise their hands. The first groups with all their hands up will get a chance to earn points. While they are shown the answer they will be able to discuss the question; however, when their group is called on they must stop talking. The teacher will randomly pick one group member to give the question. Before the jeopardy game the students are going to have a chance to work on a short worksheet where they draw different graphs based on knowledge of transformation and of the basic graphs. This worksheet will be done in small groups. The team that wins in jeopardy will get bonus points on the stock market project.

Differentiated Instruction

Strategies
Logical: This lesson will teach the students about the basic functions and what the graphs look like.
Visual: During this class the students will take a quiz on the SmartBoard in jeopardy fashion and they will be expected to draw graphs.
Intrapersonal: At some point in the class the students are going to work on filling out T-charts with the basic graphs and their functions. They will do this alone.
Interpersonal: After working alone they are taking a jeopardy quiz in groups. They will also have a chance to work on a short worksheet while in groups.
Musical: During the jeopardy quiz different sounds will play. The jeopardy theme will be included and some of the questions will involve sounds.
Natural: I will discuss where some of the equations can be found in nature.
Physical: I will include physical by having the students move around to answer the SmartBoard.
Modifications/Accommodations
I will review student's IEP, 504 or EL LIDEP and make appropriate modifications and accommodations.
If you miss a class then you are to check the class folder located next to my desk for papers that you may have missed. You can talk to me, or your fellow peers, to get the assignments and I would be more than glad to share with you any notes for the class missed. Any assignment given on a day you are absent will have the due date pushed back for you and the amount of time you will be given will depend on the assignment.
Extension: The class will be playing a jeopardy game that will use knowledge from previous classes and some questions that have not specifically been gone over yet. The students will get a chance to volunteer information and interact with the SmartBoard. After class everything done on the SmartBoard will be converted to a PDF file and uploaded to the class wiki.

Maine Standards for Initial Teacher Certification and Rationale

Standard 3 - Demonstrates a knowledge of the diverse ways in which students learn and develop by providing learning opportunities that support their intellectual, physical, emotional, social, and cultural development.
Rationale: This class will start by having students take a quick pre-quiz on the basic graphs to learn where the students are. This pre-quiz will help dictate which graphs are covered and which ones are not covered as much. This pre-quiz will assess what the students already know and give the teacher a starting point for the lesson.
Standard 4 - Plans instruction based upon knowledge of subject matter, students, curriculum goals, and learning and development theory.
Rationale: This lesson will show planned instruction because it will follow from the Maine Learning Results. It will also use many of the different intelligences. The students will get chances to move around, work alone, and work in groups. The class will start by finding out what the students already know about the basic functions and then growing off that knowledge.
Standard 5 - Understands and uses a variety of instructional strategies and appropriate technology to meet students’ needs.
Rationale: This class will use the SmartBoard for a jeopardy game about graphs and equations. The students will break into groups of 5 and be asked questions on the SmartBoard. The students will have to answer the questions either verbally or by doing something on the SmartBoard. This lesson also will use many of the multiple intelligences. There will be group work, work done alone, logical work, and verbal skills used.
Standard 8 - Understands and uses a variety of formal and informal assessment strategies to evaluate and support the development of the learner.
Rationale: This lesson will use different ways of assessing the students. At the beginning of the class the students will take a short quiz that will only be used to learn what they already know. They will also have homework to pass in that will count towards the student's grade. Later the students will take a jeopardy quiz. The students will be graded on participation during the jeopardy game and the team that wins will get bonus points on their stock market project.

Teaching and Learning Sequence:

When the students get into the classroom the desks will be set up in groups of five. The students will pick a number from a hat and go to the corresponding table. These groups are going to be used later for jeopardy.

In this class the students will learn to identify the basic functions by their graphs. These functions are important to be able to identify because they appear in mathematics and science over and over. The class will open with a comic from xkcd that will open up a discussion on the basic functions. Then the teacher will ask for any questions over the homework from last class and collect it to be graded. (20 minutes) What, Where, Why, Hook Tailor: Interpersonal, Logical, Intrapersonal
After grading and collecting the homework the teacher will pass out a pre-quiz (see attached quiz) and give the class five minutes to fill it out. This quiz will then be "graded" and the teacher will find out how many students missed each question by a show of hands. Then the teacher will hand out T-charts that will have the basic functions on it (see attached T-Chart). The class will then go over each of the functions in detail and explain how to move each function around on the coordinate plane. The teacher will make sure that everyone has a copy of what each graph looks like and the information on how to move them. They will also have a couple of graphs on a separate worksheet that are the basic functions move around and they will either have to graph the equation or write an equation for a graph (see attached worksheet). These examples will be done while the teacher is going over the new material and the students will have time to try to answer the questions while working in their small groups. After everyone has had a chance to work on the problems the teacher will give the answers. (30 minutes) Equip, Explore, Tailor: Intrapersonal, Interpersonal, Logical, Verbal, Visual
While discussing the new material the students are going to have questions on the T-charts to answer. These questions will be about moving the basic functions around on the coordinate plane. The students will be given time to work on the problems in class with their groups and the teacher will go over the answers in class. After going over the new material the groups will play a jeopardy game. During the jeopardy game the students will be asked questions that deal with equations and graphs. Some of the questions will have the students answer the questions verbally while others will have the students go up to the SmartBoard to answer the questions. When the question is given the groups may talk within themselves. When they think they have the answer the group is to raise their hands. The first group to all raise their hands will be called on and must stop talking. At this point the teacher will pick one of the students in the group randomly and the student will have to answer the question. Which ever group gets the most points at the end of the game will get bonus points on their stock market projects. (30 minutes) Explore, Experience, Rethink, Revise Tailor: Interpersonal, Visual, Logical, Kinesthetic
At the beginning of class the students will have homework to go over and pass in. This homework will count towards their grade and will be gone over during class. Then the students will take a pre-quiz about the basic functions. The students will get immediate results on how they do on the pre-quiz and the answers that most students get wrong will be covered in details. After the pre-quiz the students will get T-charts that are going to be filled out during class. The students will get immediate feedback on these papers because the answers on them will be given during class. The students will also play a jeopardy game during class. They will know if they answer a question correctly as soon as they answer and they will be able to see what other classmates think. After the jeopardy game the students will be reminded that next class is going to be presentations and that they should be finishing up their stock market projects.
